Ways to get started with using AI in your recruitment process

Author: Patrick Fisher

I recently attended a seminar on some of the generative AI stats and trends in the recruitment industry. Martin Herbst, the CEO of a recruitment tech company presented topics on why AI can be effective in recruitment, and how it can streamline and assist in the hiring process. AI has been around in some form since the 1960’s, however it has continuously evolved and has become more prominent in day-to-day life.

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI can come in many forms and is found commonly in certain software such as GPT-4 and ChatGPT (GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer). This form of text-based AI used pre studied knowledge, to help write and give you information on certain topics and subjects. A ‘Generative’ model has taken something that it’s learned from examples and what it’s been shown, to create something new based on that information.

What can AI Assist with in Recruitment?

I will start by highlighting some of the key figures surrounding AI in recruitment. At least 60% of hiring managers and individuals involved in the recruitment and hiring process have used some form of generative AI, whether it be experimenting or comfortably using the software. A survey was conducted on what the recruitment industry wanted AI to help with the most, the below table shows the results recruiters are looking for AI assistance with.

70% Database Management
52% Placement Tracking
44% Lead Generations
26% Create Job Ads

How can you make the most out of AI?

The biggest question all recruiters and hiring managers ask is how to use AI efficiently and effectively? The answer can be broken down into several steps and guidelines that can allow you and your team to make the most out of AI. As a hiring manager you will need to understand the challenges you have and the ones you want to solve. If your biggest issue in your business is having great job descriptions that sell the role and the organisation that may be the first way to introduce AI. Platforms like ChatGPT can digest information and give you a solid foundation for job descriptions and even job ads.

The next step is to assess how ready the team and organisation is to use it, see if anyone has any experience with AI and set realistic expectations and goals on the best way to use it. Once you have best adopted a method on how to integrate AI into your business, you are ready to start experimenting.

Summary

Generative AI is evolving and is becoming more and more frequent when it comes to recruitment. There are certain interfaces and software that allow AI to assist with your database and recruitment methods. A recruitment organisation, or any hiring manager should have a plan in place when it comes to their best method on how to use AI and in what they most need assistance with in their recruitment lives.
